About this track

PGMN Lead Anchor CJ Hirro criticized the country’s “ayuda culture,” saying repeated cash assistance and one-time relief have become Band-Aid responses to problems that require long-term government programs. She argued that Filipinos struggling with food, healthcare, transportation, and other basic needs should not have to depend on recurring handouts just to get by. Hirro also questioned why medical assistance, financial aid, and other forms of public support are still coursed through congressmen and other politicians before reaching qualified beneficiaries. For her, this setup gives elected officials too much influence over assistance already funded by taxpayers, allowing basic government services to be treated as political favors. Her frustration is directed at lawmakers who tolerate and sustain that system. Hirro argued that when politicians attach themselves to ayuda, medical assistance, and other public benefits, they reinforce a culture where people are encouraged to associate government help with individual officials instead of functioning institutions. “Malalim yung galit ko rito,” Hirro said. Her position is that real governance should reduce Filipinos’ dependence on political assistance through stronger public services, reliable social programs, and systems that deliver help directly to those who qualify without requiring access to powerful politicians.
