Could Alberta really leave Canada?
About this track
Canada could face its biggest political shake-up in decades as the western province Alberta prepares for a referendum that could pave the way for its separation from Canada. Albertan voters will decide whether the region should begin the legal process toward a future independence vote. Frustrated by federal policies, many separatists argue Alberta’s oil industry is being held back by Ottawa. The province produces more than 80% of Canada’s oil and contributes around 15% of its GDP, yet many residents feel their conservative values and economic interests are ignored by Liberal governments in the east. Prime Minister Mark Carney has warned the vote could become Canada’s version of Brexit calling it a ‘dangerous bluff’ based on his experience as Governor of the Bank of England during the UK’s exit from the European Union. With polls showing record support for independence at roughly one-third of Alberta’s population. Is this simply political frustration or the beginning of the end for a united Canada?
