In the year 383, a mother named Monica prayed against a ship. Her son Augustine had lied to her to board it, and while she prayed in a chapel by the water, he slipped out to sea in the dark. She stood weeping on the shore the next morning, certain God had told her no again. He had not. The ship she could not stop was carrying her son toward the garden in Milan where he would finally surrender — and toward the Easter morning she would watch him baptized. This morning devotional walks through three truths for anyone praying into silence. First, God hears the prayer you pour into His silence — Hannah stood at the doorpost with her lips moving and no sound coming out, so misread that the priest accused her of being drunk, and it was the one prayer in the room God was listening to (1 Samuel 1:11, 1 Samuel 1:15, Psalm 34:17). Second, how to wait when God stays silent — keep showing up, bring the pain to Him instead of only talking about it, and surrender the outcome before it arrives (Lamentations 3:25-26, Habakkuk 2:3, Galatians 6:9).
