What Happened When a Catholic Brit Visited Cairo
About this track
In this candid interview, Dean opens up about his journey from questioning his Catholic upbringing to embracing Islam, the challenges of navigating faith as a new convert, and why learning Islam is a lifelong marathon, not a sprint. Raised in South London and baptised into the Roman Catholic Church, Dean grew up with little knowledge of Islam beyond negative headlines and far-right narratives. After attending an EDL demonstration and seeing the hostility firsthand, he realised the hostile depiction of Muslims simply didn’t align with reality. Years later, deep conversations on late-night work shifts with a Muslim colleague began to unravel his misconceptions and clarify the core message of monotheism. A transformative trip to Cairo and the sight of thousands standing shoulder to shoulder in unified prayer sealed his decision to accept Islam.
