About this track

Link to full episode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ymTSiml8W8 Nathan Apffel tells Danny Jones what changed when he read the Bible without trying to force a sermon, life lesson, or inherited church interpretation onto it. Apffel says he was raised in church from childhood, but when he finally read the text as a history book without his youthful institutional bias, the Bible came alive in a completely different way. Instead of a flat religious object, he saw a wild story filled with fire from heaven, dead men rising, strange events, impossible scenes, and questions about who Jesus Christ really was. At one point, the reading experience is compared to Lord of the Rings because the text becomes stranger when it is allowed to be a story instead of only a doctrine. Danny and Apffel also talk about reading the Bible backward and approaching it from different angles. The point is not to dismiss faith. It is to notice how familiarity can make people stop seeing what is actually on the page. When Apffel removes the filter, the Bible becomes more mysterious, more historical, and more difficult to reduce to simple Sunday-school categories. This clip is about rediscovery. Whether someone grew up in church or avoided the Bible entirely, Apffel is arguing that the text gets stranger when you stop treating it like a slogan and start reading what it actually says.
