About this track

There was a time when it took hours of continuous rainfall to bring parts of Accra to a standstill. Today, just 30 minutes of heavy rain can flood major roads, trap vehicles, disrupt businesses, and leave entire communities underwater. So what changed? The answer lies in a combination of blocked drains, uncontrolled development, shrinking wetlands, and buildings erected on natural waterways. As Accra has expanded, many of the channels that once carried rainwater safely to the sea have been narrowed, diverted, or completely blocked. At the same time, plastic waste and silt continue to choke drainage systems, reducing their capacity to handle even moderate rainfall. The result is a city that struggles to absorb and redirect water efficiently, making short downpours far more disruptive than they should be. Unless urgent action is taken, Accra's flooding problem is likely to worsen with every rainy season.
