About this track

Link to full episode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ymTSiml8W8 Nathan Apffel tells Danny Jones the story of getting arrested after trying to ask a megachurch pastor about money. The clip begins with a specific financial question: pastor housing allowances. Apffel explains that pastors can receive tax-free housing allowances, and he describes one pastor whose housing allowance became public through lawsuit discovery years earlier. According to Apffel, the number raised a bigger question about what that allowance might look like today, especially given the pastor’s real estate. Apffel says he repeatedly tried to ask the church for answers and could not get a response. He eventually went to the church in Grapevine, Texas, intending to attend service, buy a book or sweatshirt, and ask about the pastor’s salary and housing allowance. Instead, he says he was identified, surrounded, escorted out, and later returned with signs asking the question directly: what is your housing allowance and what is your salary today? The scene turns absurd and tense. Apffel describes about twenty armed security guards surrounding him in the parking lot. He says he was charged with criminal trespassing after standing there with a sign and asking a money question. The point of the story is not just that he got arrested. It is that a church, which he argues is funded by donors and protected by religious exemptions, treated a basic financial transparency question like a threat. The second half of the clip widens into church governance. Apffel talks about hidden salary information, golden Range Rovers, building campaigns, lawyers who also manage money, and a major church with enormous assets where member voting rights were allegedly removed. He says a billion-dollar church can end up controlled by a tiny group of people, including family members and legal insiders, even though congregants built the institution with years of donations. This clip is about the tension between faith and power. Apffel is not asking whether churches should
